About Leaning Tower

If you think of going to Italy to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa, you need not spend a lot of your savings and time because you can just come over to Hilir Perak district and see the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan. It is located in Teluk Intan, Perak (Malaysia) and just about 90km from Ipoh and 164km from Kuala Lumpur. It lies in the center of the town which makes the people proud of it. Like the world famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Teluk Intan Tower is also bent and slanted to the left. What differs is only the architecture of the building because the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan resembles the architectural form of a pagoda. This is because the builder was a Chinese contractor who of course, had strong influence of his mother land, the Republic of China.

The area around the tower was paved with bricks and became a plaza. There are shopping complexes around such as 'Kompleks Menara Condong', 'Bangunan MARA' and rows of old and new shop houses where boutiques, banks, optical shops, handy crafts and others are located. Local people buy their daily needs around the place. During festive seasons such as Hari Raya, Deepavalee and Chinese New Year, the Teluk Intan Municipal Council set up tensts around the clock tower to allow people to sell local products such as handicrafts, cookies, clothes, shoes, bags and electrical goods. Beside that, the old folks especially the Chinese use to have their 'tai chee' and exercise every morning. The hospital campaigns such as free medical check-up for hypertensions, deabetes and blood donations are also carried out there.
